Classes

Can I join a weekly walk without having completed a Beginners' Workshop?

Everybody is welcome at our sessions. You will get more benefits and enjoyment from Nordic Walking if using the correct technique; therefore you will learn basic Nordic Walking technique from a qualified instructor during your first session, and you will progress to learning advanced technique during subsequent sessions.

When should I arrive?

Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled start time of the class or walk. This will allow you to sign in, have poles fitted (if you're hiring) and generally get ready.

Equipment, Clothing & Footwear

Do I need to bring Nordic Walking poles?

You are welcome to use your own Nordic Walking poles (no trekking poles, please), but you can also borrow poles for the duration of the session.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather and temperature on the day. Layers are usually a good idea, as are a hat and thin gloves in cold or windy and sun protection in hot or bright conditions.

Which shoes would you recommend?

Sturdy trainers or walking shoes, which you don't mind getting a bit wet and muddy. No wellies or open-toed shoes such as flip-flops or sandals, please.

Anything else I need to bring?

Please bring enough water and snacks to keep you going for the duration of the session. As we'll usually move around the park, a small backpack or waist pack works best.

Can I use walking or trekking poles?

No, these are different from Nordic Walking poles and don't allow you to learn and use the correct Nordic Walking technique, i.e. push through the straps to gain forward propulsion. I've written about the difference in more detail here.

Booking, Payment & Cancellations

Why do I have to book in advance?

All walks should be booked in advance to secure your place (and poles, if you're hiring). The easiest way to book is via our online booking system.

Which forms of payment do you accept?

At the moment, sessions can be paid for in cash on the day.

Do you cancel if it rains?

We only cancel if severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, high winds, flooding, heavy snow or black ice are forecast.

Safety

What is a PAR-Q?

You will be required to complete a 'Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire' before participating in any class or session with us. It provides details about your health, such as any known medical conditions. Regular exercise such as Nordic Walking will be beneficial to most people's health, but in some rare exceptions, you will be asked to check with your GP first. For more information on how we collect and store your data in line with GDPR, please refer to our Data Protection & Privacy Policy.

All walks are risk-assessed and led by a qualified, first-aid trained and DBS cleared instructor or walk leader.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions.
